Rainbow Sensory Foam

How can you make soap foam?
Can it be colorful as a rainbow?

Making a soap foam is a great sensorial activity that your kid have fun. It keeps your child busy for a long time.

You can integrate different type of knowledge in this sensory bin. We rescued the hidden animals in the foam and meanwhile practiced animal names in English. If your kid is younger, you can practice colors also.

It is great that you  can achieve so much goal with such a minimum number of material. You just need an amount of water, dish soap and colors (I used finger paint colors). It takes very little time and energy to prepare it. And, the great thing is that it keeps busy your kid so long.

To sum up, here is the benefits of this activity:
- Developing senses
- Gaining colors knowledge
- Gaining animals knowledge
- Learning new words in a second language
- Improving creativity

The video below is our activity. Though, conversations is not in English, you can still understand that we are trying to find the animals. I added English subtitle also. You will find the recipe in the video.

Walnut Shell Crafts

Walnut shell is a nice material you can use in many way .

For instance, you can make sweet boats with them. Put some play dough in the shell. Insert toohpick and stick some paper on.

We made animal figures using shell. They are really nice. We made a rabbit, a mouse, a spider and a turtle. You can find more on pinterest.  You just need some colors, a pen and some paper or chenille.

They are really pretty! Even I, loved playing with them.

What are the benefits of this activity:

Children can learn thinking in a different way of using materials, such as a walnut shell. It is not merely a shell, we can use it in different manners. Doing such activities enhances thinking creatively and thus, producing a new and unique material by just learning to ask himself : "What can I do with this material?"

Simple Quilling Examples For Beginners

Quilling is a very simple technique of art itself. If you do not know anything about it, I advise you to start buying a small quilling set. If you like doing it and want to continue, then you can buy a set including more materials. Thus, you can start doing more complex crafts. Actually, the good  thing with quilling is , you do the complex designs using the same simple and basic patterns again, that is, you will not to learn an advanced level of patterns to make more "difficult" works. All you need will be imagining more detailed and think all process step by step and decide on which shape you will need to reach at your task in your mind.

What I mean is this: If you are planning to make a mouse - like me in the link below- you need to think about the suitable shapes to be done for head, body, arms, feet, ears and tail. I used a drop shape for head and body, so I did 2 of that pattern, for instance. And, ears are circular, hence I would need 2 circles. And, for feet, eyes and arms I decided on using cylindirical shape , thus I made 6 of them. Lastly, I made a shape just by folding a thin piece of paper. In the end, all I had to do was just sticking them  in the right places.

Here, I am sharing just one example, the mouse, because it was really nice :) You can find the way of making butterfy, sheep and a flower in my youtube page.

And I should mention this as a last word: The good thing about quilling is that although it seems an activity for adults, you can make a lot of quilling activities with your children older than 6 easily. They will love the result!

How to Dye Rice

If you are looking for a creative sensory bin, then you should try rainbow rice.
It is so easy to make, but it keeps the child so busy at the same time. It nourishes the creativity of children in many aspects. First of all, since it is  colorful, it attracts the kids (even me) so much and keeps their attention focused on that activity for a long time. Besides, it has a different feeling which strikes their sense of touch and they can have the opportunity to experience a different tissue, which in turn leads to development of senses and creating new paths intheir brain and finally, development of intelligence.

You can make different colors of rice as much as you prefer. I tried to include both primary colors and mid-tones at the same time. In order to achieve additional goals, I mixed the colors also. Some colors were missing in our home, so we mixed blue and red to obtain purple, for instance. And, we said, lets try all colors what we will have? Thus, we had the opportunity to observe the results of mixing colors on hand, and we obtained brown when mixing all.
And, though it not seen in the video, I included my daughter inthe activity by giving her a role of pouring the color, or shaking the rice bag well.
Here is the recipe:
For each color:
- A cup of rice
- Color
- A plastic bag
- Vinegar

Add a cup of rice in the plastic bag (it does not need to be zipperbag because there will not be something liquid in the bag).
Add an amount of color (whatever you have, it can be food coloring, acrylic, etc. I used fingerpaint color).
Add 2 tablespoons of vinegar (actually it can be less than this also)
Close the bag and shake it well so that all rice is colored evenly.

And, below  is our colorful rice and a fall sensory bin (bonus:))

About Me

Hello, I’m Emine. My journey as an educator and a mother has brought profound transformations both professionally and personally. I have been a mathematics teacher for over 15 years, and in recent years, I have focused deeply on pedagogical approaches, alternative education systems, and child-centered learning models. I discovered the Montessori pedagogy alongside my journey of motherhood. While seeking ways to support my daughters’ early childhood development—encouraging their self-discipline and natural curiosity for learning—I connected deeply with this approach. As part of this path, I obtained my AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) certified Montessori teaching diploma . Currently, my children attend a school in Belgium that follows the Freinet pedagogy , an alternative educational model. This experience has enriched my interest in method schools beyond parenting, deepening it as an educator. I explore and compare approaches such as Reggio Emilia, Waldorf, Freinet...
